Leadership and Me

My name is Ali Horel and I am a senior in the Hospitality and Tourism Management program at San Diego State University with an emphasis in Meetings and Events. My leadership style is largely based around my core values of positivity, perseverance, teamwork, and passion. I think my leader style is a combination of Transformational Leadership and Participative Leadership. I think that the relationship that a leader has with the individuals in the team has a huge impact on how much people listen to the leader and how productive the team is. I also think that it's important to encourage participation and input from your team members, and even to try some of their ideas so that they feel heard. I remember being a new-hire and I was much more receptive to direction and feedback when it was coming from a manager that I had a good relationship with and who made me feel like my ideas were heard, versus someone that I didn't really get along with as well who just told me what to do all the time. Having grown up participating in team sports, I think that any organization can function well if it is viewed as a team as opposed to some kind of hierarchy of managers and subordinates. A team must trust in each other and respect and listen to the other team members as much as they respect and listen to the leader.

Good leadership is hard to explain specifically because it involves developing and growing as an individual to fit the needs of your team. If you keep a positive attitude and push through challenges with the help of your team, and adjust your leadership style as needed, you can be successful as a leader. My journey as a leader started kind of all over the place, but I think I have honed my skills and grown personally and professionally to get myself headed in a good direction.
